Creating an online Class Book in Google Docs

This is a series of steps for teachers who would like to compile their class' work into one Google Docs document to share online.

Compiling

    1. Have all students share the desired class writing to your Google Docs account.

    2. Ensure that students have not shared any sensitive information in their writing, such as, full name, age, location, picture of self...

    3. Ensure that all student images have proper attribution/reference information.

    4. Create a new document with the desired class book title.

    5. Edit the title page with an appropriate title, intro text, and image if desired.

    6. Below all title page text, Click Insert > Page Break (Ctrl - Enter) to start your first student writing page.

    7. Navigate to the first student document. (You'll have to return to your Home - Google Docs tab)

    8. Select and copy the desired student text/images. You might need to use the shortcut keys Ctrl - C

    9. Navigate back to your class book document.

    10. Place insertion point on new page and paste student work: Ctrl - V

    11. Insert new Page Break (Ctrl - Enter).

    12. Repeat steps 7-11 until all desired student work has been added to document.

Sharing

    1. Click on the Share button in upper right corner.

    2. At the top of the sharing setting is the main access (visibility) setting. The default is Private

    3. Click Change...

    4. Change setting to either Public on the web or Anyone with the link.

    5. Click Save

    6. Notice there is a link to your document, your online Class Book, at the top of the dialog box.

    7. Copy the link and post to your website or email to parents.

    8. If you don't have a website or have no parent emails, use the URL shortening directions I've saved here and supply that short URL on a note home.
